Information For Authors

Here are the criteria to be met by documents submitted to Revista Sotavento MBA.

Revista Sotavento MBA is an academic journal of the School of Management at Universidad Externado de Colombia, which is governed by principles of pluralism, tolerance and theoretical and methodological rigor. It accepts papers of researcher from public and private institutions.

As a mean of dissemination of academic production of the Faculty of Business Administration, it also receives research results of the affiliated research centers and of the graduated students. Additionally, this journal seeks to promote the impact of knowledge in programs and in the managerial practices in Colombia and Latin America.

1. Type of documents

Revista Sotavento MBA receives the following types of papers, based on the criteria defined by Colciencias for scientific journals.

• Research paper: Document that presents results of a finished research project in detail; its content is original. These documents must have the following structure: introduction, theoretical background, methodology, results, conclusions and references. This type of paper is preferred.

• Thought / reflection paper: Document that presents results of a finished research project; based on an analytical, interpretative or critical perspective, about a specific topic, by using original sources.

• Review paper: Document that presents results of a finished research project. It analyzes, systematizes and integrates research findings published or unpublished, on a field of science or technology, in order to account for the progress and development trends. It is characterized by a careful review of the literature of at least 50 references.

• Short paper: Short paper that presents preliminary or partial results of original scientific research or technological, which usually require a quick diffusion.

• Case report: Document that presents the results of a study on a particular situation in order to present experiences considered in a specific case. It includes commented systematic review of the literature on similar cases.

• Literature review: Document that is an outcome of the critical review of the literature on a particular topic.

• Letters to the Editor: Positions critical, analytical or interpretive on documents published in the journal, which in the opinion of the Editorial Board are an important contribution to the discussion of the subject by the respective scientific community.

• Editorial: Document written by the editor, an editorial board member or a guest researcher on guidelines in the subject domain of the magazine.

• Translation: Translations of classical texts or transcripts of current or historical documents of particular interest in the field of the journal.

• Discussion paper, or derivative research.

• Book or paper review.

• Others.

2. Presentation

• Extension: The summary of the article should be between 150 and 200 words. It should include 5 keywords. The body of the paper should be between 3,000 and 10,000 words, including figures, tables, references and appendices. Line spacing is simple with font Times New Roman, size 12.

• Title: In Spanish and English. Describe clearly the issue, the unit of analysis, period of time and geographical location, as applicable.

• Abstract: In Spanish and English. Describe the main theme of the paper; the theoretical framework used, the object of study, whether individuals, companies, industries, regions or countries; the methodology and procedures used to obtain the results and key findings.

• Information about the authors: In a footnote, please detail for each author: institutional affiliation, highest grade of education attained and email.

• Quotes and references: When quoting another author's ideas (in a textual manner or not), please place a parenthesis at the end of the idea with the information about the source. If the quotation is textual, you must include the page:

One author:
(Porter, 1999);
(Mintzberg, 1998: 25).

Two authors:
(Hofstede & Minkov, 2010)

More tan two authors:
(Avery et al., 2008)

More than one document with the same idea::

(Hancké, 1998; Mackinnon et al. 2004)

• Acknowledgments: Must be presented after the references.

• Footnotes: Reserved for brief explanations or clarifications.

• References: should be placed after the conclusions and before the appendices. Each document is organized alphabetically by author's last name or institution's name. The information changes depending on the type of document:

3. Form of delivery: Papers are received in the email: revistasotavento@uexternado.edu.co. The author should include in the email the following files. Word file format with the full article. As applicable, will be added: file in Excel format with graphics or tables, PowerPoint file format, JPEG, or TIFF with diagrams, maps, or figures. In any case the graphs, charts, diagrams, maps and figures must be grayscale, not color.

4. Process: Revista Sotavento MBA is a peer reviewed journal and each article will be review by two to anonymous referees in a double blind process. The referees will not have conflict of interest with the authors and their works. They should acknowledge the understanding of the journal´s international standards of scientific publication, especially regarding the control of plagiarism and the process of peer review, and accept the privacy statement. Once received the paper and attachments, the journal sends a confirmation email to the author. The concept of the pair is sent to the author for adjustments that may be required. After receiving the adjusted article, it is sent a second time to the peer for the final concept. The Editorial Board will issue the final decision to publish the article. The author will receive a letter telling you the final decision. There are no author processing charges or submission charges for publishing in this journal.

5. Ethical Standars: the author must clearly state: i) if agress with the Editorial Policy of the Revista Sotavento; ii) that the article has not been published, and iii) that the article is not in the selection process of another academic journal or publication.

6. Intellectual property: The journal requires the author’s approval, through a license of use, for editing, publication, reproduction, distribution and public communication of its work; in physical and digital format, for exclusively scientific, cultural and non-profit purposes. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication, which will be licensed with Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike. The reproduction of documents in other printed or electronic media must include an acknowledgement of the authorship of the work and its initial publication, as set forth in the license. The authors may disclose their documents in any repository or website. Immediately after its publication, the articles will be indexed and archived electronically for future reference and access. The articles are also available free of charge on the website: [www.uexternado.edu.co/sotavento]; and in the following databases: Latindex, EBSCO, Cengage Learning, Dialnet, Latam-Studies, SSRN, DOAJ and the Open Journal System.
